Three new Volvo EC220E crawler excavators  and two Volvo A25G articulated haulers have been delivered to Leeds based Sirius Group for their civil engineering division – Sirius Civils and thanks to an ever increasing order book for multi-faceted contracts, form part of a significant £2m investment in plant for the Group in 2019.

“Our Civils division requested Volvos as their machine of choice,” comments Group Plant Director, Stuart Kirk. “The Volvo EC220Es are the optimum size of excavator for the majority of work we undertake, finding them productive, well balanced with plenty of digging power and very much favoured by our operators,” he continues. “We know from our own experiences that they have a good pedigree in terms of reliability and productivity and they hold strong residual values so everything fell right in striking the deal.”

Powered by a 6-cylinder Volvo engine developing 174 nett hp, the EC220E offers the latest in engine technology and operating sophistication. For example, pump flow is controlled for combined digging and swinging operations to reduce flow loss through the overload relief valves, whilst maintaining digging power and maximum swing torque. When Eco-mode is selected, the machine provides better fuel efficiency without loss of performance in most operating conditions.

The Volvo Care Cab offers a large roomy interior with plenty of leg room and foot space. The excellent all-round visibility is enhanced by pressurized and filtered cab air supplied by a 14-vent, climate control system. An adjustable easy-to-read LCD colour monitor provides real time information of the machine functions.

The new EC220Es have been supplied in standard specification which includes hose rupture valves to both boom and dipper cylinders, quick fit hydraulics and hammer / shear hydraulic lines. The combination of the 5.7m boom and 2.9m dipper arm affords the machine a maximum digging reach of 9.93 metres and a dig depth of 6.73 metres. The practical dumping height is a generous 6.55 metres and the machine’s maximum lifting capacity across carriage at full reach, an impressive 2.8 tonnes. Additional features supplied with the machines to Sirius Civils include X3 rotation circuits, heavy duty belly plates and side impact rails to protect the superstructure from potential site damage. All three machines feature Volvo’s pro-active monitoring system which will provide real-time data on machine uptime, production rates and operator performance. The package also includes a full, three-year warranty and a Blue Volvo service agreement meaning that the machines will be serviced at the correct intervals by Volvo trained service engineers using genuine Volvo parts.

Two new Volvo A25G articulated haulers have also been delivered with more units on order for delivery this year for the Sirius fleet of equipment. The A25G articulated hauler can carry 25 tonnes with a heaped capacity of 15.3m³ and is powered by a Stage IV Volvo V-ACT six-cylinder engine developing 318 net hp. A maximum torque of 1942Nm is achieved at just 1100 r/min, which means this is available at relatively low engine speeds, resulting in good fuel efficiency, high performance, quicker engine response, less engine wear and a longerservice life. Purpose built by Volvo, the engine is matched to the Volvo drive train featuring in house designed and manufactured transmission, drop box and heavy duty axles with outboard wet disc brakes, ensuring the best use of power and torque, even in tough working conditions.  Dynamic and predictive gear selection adapts to operating conditions, for improved comfort and fuel efficiency.

The new arrivals form part of a fleet of some twenty excavators and five articulated haulers, two of which were recently modified to work towing K Tec box scrapers. Further investments due this year will be for additional articulated haulers and bull dozers.
