RJT Excavations Ltd of Jedburgh in the Scottish Borders continues to invest in Volvo Construction Equipment products by taking delivery of a further four excavators for its plant fleet.

These most recent additions to RJT Excavations’ fleet come in the guise of a forty tonne Volvo EC380E equipped with standard digging equipment coupled to a Trimble groundworks machine control system, and three smaller twenty-two tonne EC220Es. One of the EC220Es has Volvo’s Dig Assist option installed on the machine, which is the first to be delivered in Great Britain since it was launched earlier this year. “We have a long association with Volvo Construction Equipment products and are currently operating excavators from fourteen to fifty tonnes and A30 articulated haulers,” says RJT’s Assistant Plant Manager Euan Heard. “Opting for the Dig Assist functionality on one of the new twenty-two tonne machine’s along with a Steelwrist Tilt Rotator will bring added functionality on some of the speciality projects we are currently undertaking,” he continues. “Our operators certainly appreciate the level of comfort in the cab and in general, the performance and reliability of our Volvos has prompted the decision to invest in more of the same.”

The EC380E is powered by a Stage V compliant engine developing 306 net horsepower offeringthe latest in engine technology and operating sophistication. The Volvo Care Cab offers a large roomy interior with plenty of leg room and foot space. The excellent all round visibility is enhanced by pressurized and filtered cab air supplied by a 14 vent, climate control system. An adjustable easy to read LCD colour monitor provides real time information of the machine functions, important diagnostic information and a wide variety of work tool settings besides providing visibility to the operator from the rear and side view cameras. The EC380E offers plenty of reach and dig depth (11m and 7.3m respectively) and a massive breakout force of 215kN.

The smaller EC220E is installed with a Stage V six-cylinder engine developing 174 nett hp. Pump flow is controlled for combined digging and swinging operations to reduce the flow loss through the overload relief valves, whilst maintaining digging power and maximum swing torque. When Eco mode is selected, the machine provides better fuel efficiency without loss of performance in most operating conditions. The Dig Assist feature installed on one of the machines is an on-board application that assists the operator to dig either a line, slope, level or various profiles. It also provides a height a dig depth alarm when excavating and all the functionality is performed using a large touch screen mounted in the cab above the main information pod.

“Another reason for continuing to invest in Volvo machines is down to the high level of after-market support we receive from SMT GB’s support centre at Stirling together with their flexible arrangements for providing the right type of service agreement to suit our needs,” says Euan.  “This means we can take full advantage of the support from Volvo’s dealer and keep our team of workshop and mobile engineers fully engaged at the same time.”
