Just over forty years since placing its first order with Mastenbroek, White Horse Contractors this month returned to the manufacturer of self-propelled trenchers to take delivery of its latest machine.

The leading drainage contractor took delivery of a Mastenbroek 20/15 complete with a specialist sports field system.

The latest self-propelled trenchers are a far cry from the one that White Horse purchased in 1980.

Traded for a new Mastenbroek 20/15 two years later, the type 90S drainage machine which White Horse bought on 7th May 1980 featured a Hiab 245 crane for handling clay drainage tiles and a Spectra Physics 945 Laser system for trench depth and grade control.

Mastenbroek’s trenchers have come a long way since then. The machine delivered this month features a low emission 320hp, Volvo Penta Industrial Diesel Engine, and pipes reels for handling coiled drainage pipes rather than clay tiles. Mastenbroek has also incorporated an electro-hydraulic proportional machine control system, and Trimble® GPS has replaced the laser for not only controlling trench depth and grade, but also autosteer together with topographical survey, design and as installed mapping.

White Horse’s machine comes equipped with Mastenbroek’s optional sportsfield conveyor system, which removes excavated spoil to adapt the model for sports turf applications. The machine also features a side-mounted cabin, ROPS certified to ISO3471:2008 for operator safety, and hydraulic side shift with elevation for all round job site visibility.

Established over 60 years ago, White Horse Contractors design and construct highly effective land drainage systems for customers across agriculture, sport, leisure, education, amenity, and environmental sectors.

White Horse will initially use its new 20/15 machine to install primary drainage to a new sports field project in their home county of Berkshire. With a healthy forward order book this summer and beyond, there will be no shortage of work for the new 20/15 trencher across the UK for the specialist contractors.

“We are delighted to mark 40 years of working with Mastenbroek by taking delivery of the new 20/15 trencher,” says David Smith, managing director at White Horse Contractors. “We have a long-standing relationship with Mastenbroek. We operate several Mastenbroek trenchers, and they are incredibly well made, highly effective and are backed up with exceptional service. The latest models, with Trimble® GPS, are incredible, and we are looking forward to putting this new machine to use on several prestigious projects.”

Christopher Pett, general manager at Mastenbroek, adds: “We are very pleased indeed to have supplied this new 20/15 to White Horse Contractors. In the four decades that we have worked with them, White Horse has become one of the most respected and successful drainage contractors in the country. Like them, our machines have developed a great deal in that time, and today, we offer a wide range of trenchers that are used around the world.”

Mastenbroek manufactured its first trencher in 1977; since then, the company has grown into a globally respected name in trenching, machine automation through its partnership with Trimble®, subsea cutting technology, ground stabilisation and groundwater control.
