In the first Labour budget for 14 years, chancellor Rachel Reeves set out the plans to ‘Get Britain Building Again’.
Promising the biggest increase in social and affordable housebuilding in a generation.
The plan promises to update the National planning policy with the restoration of mandatory housing targets.
The plan promises tough action to ensure planning authorities have updated local plans and reports with new planning powers to councils and mayoral cities. With funding pledged for additional planning officers.
With a brownfield first approach the policy will prioritise and fast track the use of previously built on land. The statement goes on to say that Government realises this approach alone will not be enough. With the promise of a more strategic approach to greenbelt land designed to ensure the right homes are built in the right places.
A set of golden rules will be introduced around the use of grey belt land to ensure projects will be considerate to the community and nature.
Critically there are promises towards reforming compulsory purchase and compensation legislation, with the objective of speeding up land assembly and site delivery.
Finally, and interestingly a new generation of new towns are promised in addition to urban expansion and regeneration projects.
