A south west contractor has bought the first long reach version of JCB’s X Series range of crawler excavators and declared the machine: “a real eye-opener”.

Dartmouth-based JW Baron Earthworks purchased the specialist JCB 220X model which has been fitted with a 15.6-metre long reach boom.

With the addition of the longer boom and capable of powering a broad range of specialist attachments, the new JCB model is tailor made for services JW Baron Earthworks offers its clients across the South West.

Specialising in environmental earthworks, the JCB 220X Long Reach will be assisting with a variety of projects that include: flood alleviation works, waterway repairs, pond and lake dredging and coastal protection works.

JW Baron Earthworks owner James Baron said: “I am really impressed with the new X Series: the build quality, the high quality components and the cab which is one of the best in the business. There has certainly been a lot of thought and customer consultation gone into the design and manufacturing process. This machine has been an eye opener.”

Operator Peter Vooght added: “I have to say it’s very impressive; smooth and refined on the levers and the cab comfort levels are fantastic. They have done a good job with this machine. This is the first JCB on the fleet and I feel quite proud to be supporting a great British manufacturer and its products.”

The new JCB 220X, 20-tonne tracked excavator model, has been designed to provide maximum operator comfort, durability and reliability in operation. Over a four-year development period, JCB has undertaken a programme of intensive component and product testing to achieve increased levels of build quality and reliability for customers in this advanced new machine.

Based in Dartmouth, South Devon, J.W. Baron Earthworks has provided agricultural and environmental earthworks and earthmoving throughout the South West since 1997.
