I love this job

The first Derry girl I get to have a chat with is Amy Arnold. She hails from Ballymoney and started working with Wills Bros in early 2019. She started on controlling the traffic lights at the various junctions on the jobsite.

Before she got involved in construction, she was helping out on the family farm. This is where she got her first taste of operating machinery and was quite handy at driving a tractor at the age of nine. As she was watching the dump trucks working away whilst on the traffic lights, she made up her mind that was what she wanted to do. She applied to do her ticket and successfully passed the course.

Opportunity

Wills Bros gave her an opportunity of operating a Bomag roller and she worked hard at it for the next six months. Soon she got the itch again and really wanted to progress on to dump trucks. Amy has really applied herself to the job and has recently been given new responsibilities as the Covid-19 compliance officer. She ensures that machine cabs are cleaned down if changing operators and that canteen hut hygiene is top class.

I ask Amy to describe her typical day. “I ensure that all staff on site are observing our strict Covid-19 regulations and standards. I also check on all the pumps we have on the site, and from time to time I will hop in a machine if they need some extra help. I really love this job, I love being here, I love what we are doing and most importantly I love working outdoors. It is great to see the progress we are making daily and you know in ten years’ time I will be able to tell my friends that I helped build this road”, said Amy.
