Job-seekers from as far afield as Exeter and Glasgow flocked to Cambridge on Saturday in a bid to take on a new career in the region’s booming construction industry.

Cambridge Regional College hosted a construction careers events aimed at the £1.5 billion A14 road investment to highlight the shortage of skilled construction workers in the Cambridgeshire region. The regeneration project will require upwardly of 180 apprentices and 2000 skilled workers.

The event which was supported by all the contractors and plant hire providers due to work on the project saw hundreds attend, and attracted job seekers from as far and wide as Devon and Glasgow along with hundreds from the local community.

The college’s director of employer engagement Paul Skitt said it was working closely with businesses to fill the construction skills gap.

“It was a very successful day and we are extremely proud to have been able to bring major employers and job-hunters together at such an inspirational event,” he said.

“It was one the largest events to be held for the construction sector in this region, with well over 400 visitors attending and registering interest for specific apprenticeship jobs or courses.

“We are engaging closely with businesses linked to the A14 project to ensure the college can support the training and skills required to ensure its success and looking forward to continuing to develop specialist apprenticeships for the sector.”
