Volvos keep on running at Jakto

Barnsley based Jakto Excavations has taken delivery of a further three Volvo A25G articulated haulers, increasing the company’s mixed fleet of A25s and A30s to seventeen machines

“We need reliable machines for our earthmoving, remedial and demolition contracts and in our long experience of owning and operating Volvo articulated haulers, they are without doubt second to none,” comments Managing Director, Neil Hellewell. “Our oldest trucks are now fifteen years old and all except one still have their original powertrains in place – they just keep on running!”

The latest group of trucks join an existing fleet of Volvo A25 and A30 articulated haulers from the D-series to the current G-series which now total seventeen, along with other mixed plant including excavators, dozers, soil compactors and loading shovels. Specialising in large bulk muck-shifting projects along with remedial work and demolition is the ‘bread and butter’ work for Jakto Excavations across the north of England and the Midlands. One such project, on a new development project to the north-east of Leeds where the company is engaged in a massive 1,000,000m³ cut-and-fill earthmoving project, saw all three new arrivals joining the rest of Jakto’s Volvo hauler fleet – all on one site!

“On a job like this it’s vital that everything is up and running and on the whole, our Volvo haulers are highly productive and reliable,” adds Neil. “But the

most important factor for us is the ability to support the equipment in the field – I have to say that in our experience, if there’s been a problem or an issue, Volvo reacts quickly to resolve it which speaks volumes in our opinion,” he continues.

The A25G articulated hauler can carry 25 tonnes with a heaped capacity of 15.3m³ and is powered by a Stage-IV Volvo V-ACT six-cylinder engine producing 318 net hp. A maximum torque of 1,942 Nm is achieved at just 1,100 r/min, which means this is available at relatively low engine speeds, resulting in good fuel efficiency, high performance, quicker engine response, less engine wear and a longer service life. The engine is matched to the Volvo drive-train featuring in-house designed and manufactured transmission, drop box and heavy-duty axles with outboard wet disc brakes, ensuring the best use of power and torque, even under tough working conditions.  Dynamic and predictive gear selection adapts to operating conditions, for improved comfort and fuel efficiency.

Jakto Excavations, an extension of Jakto Tarnsport Ltd, is a family-run business founded by Tony Hellewell in 1964 as a transport and coal haulage concern, moving into earthmoving, groundwork, remediation and demolition contracting in 1990. The company, with a turnover in excess of £18m per year, employs over 100 personnel and operates from a ten-acre site on the outskirts of Barnsley, which is also the centre for their inert material recycling business.
